You + Permits = BFFs (sort of)
A 5-day challenge (May 5-9, 2025) for creative business owners who want to stop Googling, start doing, and finally feel legit.
Finally figure out the legal stuff your business actually needs.
Without the jargon. Without the panic spiral. Without spending 6 hours down the Internet rabbit hole.
If you’ve been asking yourself:
- “Do I need a business license to sell at a craft fair?”
- “Wait, what’s a DBA?”
- “I probably don’t need a fire permit…right?”
- “How does sales tax actually work if I sell online and in-person?”
- “Am I going to get in trouble if I do this wrong?”
This challenge is for you. Because you’re not trying to become a legal expert — you just want to make sure you’re not missing something important. And you’re done letting that uncertainty hold you back.

What this is
For Real: The “Do I Need a Permit for This?” Edition is a 5-day guided challenge that helps you confidently check the legal boxes you need for your creative business — and skip the ones you don’t.
It’s part clarity session, part accountability sprint, and part legal sanity-saver.
You’ll walk away knowing:
- Which permits, licenses, and registrations apply to you (and how to get them).
- What’s required at the city, county, and state level — without the guesswork.
- How to navigate common creative business scenarios like selling at markets, teaching workshops, or working from home.
- What to do today, and what can wait.
All with clear, friendly, no-shame support from a California-licensed attorney who’s helped thousands of creatives figure this out (and sleep better at night).

Meet your guide
I’m not just someone who’s “into legal stuff.” I’m a licensed California attorney who has spent more than a decade helping creative entrepreneurs untangle the legal knots holding them back from growing confidently.
Since 2011, I’ve worked exclusively with makers, artists, designers, writers, and other brilliant self-employed humans — not corporate clients. Just creatives like you who want to feel legit and protected without giving up their sanity in the process.
I’ve answered thousands of questions like yours, taught workshops across the country, and built a reputation for adding ease to the legalese. And I do it all in plain Engish and without fear tactics — just calm, clear guidance from someone who actually gets it.
If you’re nervous, overwhelmed, or convinced you’re the only one who hasn’t figured this out yet…you’re exactly who I built this challenge for.
What you get
- Daily lessons delivered via email + housed inside the artist’s Courtyard: Each one is short, focused, and gives you one clear thing to work on that day — no overwhelm, no legal firehose.
- Downloadable workbook + permit checklist: Your action plan, all in one place. No scattered sticky notes or mystery tabs.
- 24/7 support inside the artist’s Courtyard: Ask your questions anytime, get answers, skip the Facebook chaos.
- Live group session: I’ll be answering your questions, helping you get unstuck, and holding your feet to the fire to cross tasks off your list. You’ll leave feeling lighter by having tasks done and have an action plan for anything still on your list.
- Clarity, confidence, and momentum: You’ll move forward knowing what’s done, what’s next, and what doesn’t apply to you (yet).
Who this is for
This is for you if:
- You’ve turned your hobby into a business, and now you’re ready to take it seriously — but you want to get it right from the start
- You’ve been running your creative business for a while, but never quite got around to the paperwork (and it’s starting to haunt you)
- You want to sell at a market, do a pop-up, open a studio, or start teaching — and suddenly, people are asking if you have permits
- You’re not afraid of the legal stuff… you’re just not sure where to start (and don’t want to mess it up)

The challenge breakdown
- Day 1 – Business licenses 101: What business licenses are (and aren’t), and how to find out all the specifics for your exact kind of creative business.
- Day 2 – Sales tax simplified: When you need a sales tax permit, how to know if you have to collect sales tax for other states, and how to keep track of everything.
- Day 3 – Do you need a DBA? When a Doing Business As name is required, what it really is, and how to get one if you need to.
- Day 4 – Fire permits + other local permits: The random permits that your city or county might require (especially for those of you who work out of your home or make jewelry!)
- Day 5 – Put it all together: What to do next, how to prioritize, and how to keep everything organized + up to date.
FAQs
1. When will the challenge be held? And what if I don’t have time that week?
The challenge will be hosted May 5-9, 2025. And it’s okay if you don’t have time that week! You’ll get all the challenge materials via email, so you can work through it when you’re ready (or repeat it when your business pivots).
2. When will the live session happen? What if I can’t attend live?
The live session will be held on May 9, 2025 at 10 AM Pacific | 1 PM Eastern. If you have a question and can’t attend live, you can submit your question in advance and the session will be recorded.
3. I already have a license. Will this still help me?
Yes — most creatives miss one or more required filings. This challenge will help you confirm what you’ve done and spot anything you may have overlooked.
4. What if I still have questions after the lessons?
You’ll be able to ask questions directly inside the artist’s Courtyard, where I will answer every question personally.
5. Will this apply to my exact state or city?
Yes. While I can’t keep a database of all the exact rules for every kind of creative business in every city, county, and state, I’m not going to leave you to the wolves. I’ll show you how to find the right information fast, without being a lawyer yourself. And I’ll be here to help if you get stuck.
6. I’m just getting started. Is this too advanced?
Nope. It’s designed to help you set the right foundation, even if you’re still part-time or just starting to sell.
7. I’ve had my business for years. Am I too late? Will I get in “trouble”?
You’re right on time. Many creatives clean this up after years — this challenge will help you do it efficiently and confidently. And you’ll get in less trouble (or no trouble) for filing for these permits and licenses proactively, but you will get in trouble if you get caught without them.
8. What if I mess something up?
Most things are fixable — I’ll show you how to handle common missteps (and how to avoid the ones that matter most).
9. How long does this take each day?
My goal is to give you exactly what you need (and nothing more). So each lesson should take about 20 minutes. You can binge them all or do them as they come — whatever fits your life.
10. Is this just really a challenge to upsell an expensive course or 1:1 services?
Nope. Yes, many of the permits/licenses will come with a filing fee. But the challenge itself is all-inclusive, and I’m not going to be upselling you on an expensive course or 1:1 services. The only offer I’ll be sending is a single email to those who buy the standalone challenge, just in case you decide you want to continue inside the artist’s Courtyard with me.
11. Can’t I just Google this?
Absolutely. But that’s probably what you’ve already tried…and it hasn’t worked. This is curated, trusted, up-to-date, and specific to you — with expert support built-in.
